Your Middle School or High School Aged Child Can Use This Summer to Get a Leg Up
The summer is the perfect time to get your son or daughter on the track to academic success. Far too many students struggle during the school year because their core academic and executive function skill-set is not appropriately developed. Even strong middle school and high school students have difficulty separating key concepts from inessential details, reading efficiently for comprehension, taking useful notes, and writing essays and preparing for tests in a timely fashion. Very few teenagers possess the ability to plan and track their time, hold themselves accountable to goals and obligations, and to keep themselves in healthy states of mind with productive routines. Teachers and administrators are much too busy with curricular and bureaucratic obligations to attack the major weaknesses that hold students back. Fortunately, some intensive work during the summer can cure these struggles.
Study Skills and Methods
We work with middle school and high school students every summer in a study skills workshop to help them achieve grades equal to their abilities. Our study method teaches students to read texts across the curriculum for comprehension and retained understanding. Further, we teach a note-taking method that promotes efficiency and allows students to understand key concepts and how they are connected to main ideas through classification.
When notes are well-organized, concise, and connected to the rhetorical structure of the chapter or section, one develops a deeper understanding of key points, terms, and definitions. This method promotes true associative learning, which is the only way to hold on to information for easy recall. Notes are also the foundation for the development of critical listening skill and we teach students how to use their notes in connection with teacher lectures and Power Point presentations.
Next, we teach middle and high schoolers how to write the classic 5 paragraph essay. We give students a recipe for development of ideas, teach them how to build a transition from paragraph to paragraph, and how to clearly illuminate main points and the thesis of their work.
Life Management Skills
These key academic skills are the foundation of academic success but are not the entirety of a robust teenage life. One must also know how to plan and use time wisely and efficiently in order to get strong grades and have time for activities, sports, friends, relaxation, and fun. Thus, we teach our time management method for planning and review to every summer program attendee. Every successful student needs to know how to create time to prepare for classes and complete assignments and obligations, a method for decision making and prioritizing, and how to keep him or herself in a healthy and productive state of being.
Our time management module promotes independence and helps students take stock of what they want and need to accomplish and what steps are needed to achieve such goals. We reinforce the most important question to be asked at any moment: What is the best use of my time right now? Every attendee will learn the weekly planning, reviewing, and self-management tools to keep themselves healthy, happy, and full of energy.
Course Preview Tutoring for Difficult Fall Courses
For those students who have struggled with specific courses or skills during the school year, we use the summer as a time to rebuild and prepare for the upcoming year. We offer course preview tutoring for those classes that students expect to be difficult and we work through the lingering course-specific skill gaps. By reinforcing the weak skill areas and previewing the first several chapters of their upcoming classes, tutorees start the school year with confidence. They are familiar with the opening sections of course material and ready to thrive as coursework grows more complex during the year.
